Ngā Manu Huna is an art–ecology project broadcasting the calls of kiwi live from a remote valley in Te Pēwhairangi (Bay of Islands) during the first two hours of darkness of autumn’s new moons of May and June. Using portable satellite technology, the project streams nocturnal sound in real time to audiences around the world.
The project aligns with the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar) and Te Papa Atawhai | Department of Conservation’s annual kiwi call monitoring period, bringing together environmental sound, mātauranga Māori, conservation science, and contemporary art.
The project will return annually.
